QUICK hitting from Clive Madande saw him close in on scoring his third First-Class century as he helped put Tuskers in charge of their Logan Cup encounter against Southern Rocks at Queens Sports Club yesterday.

It was the first day of the match and Madande finished seven runs shy of what would have been a brilliantly batted century. He will have to wait until the resumption of the game today to get triple figures.

Tuskers were asked to bat first and at stumps they were in a commanding position, on 312/4 in 89 overs.

Madande finished on 93 runs from 116 balls while his partner, Aliakbar Hamid was on 73 runs off 133 balls. The duo had notched up a 150 runs stand for the second wicket, putting their team on the driver’s seat on the opening day.

It was not only Madande and Hamid who managed to score half centuries on day one but also opener Tanunurwa Makoni who retired hurt on 54 runs off 147 balls while Milton Shumba fell eight runs short of his half century on 42 runs after facing 71 balls.

The other Tuskers wickets that fell were of captain Brian Chari (zero off two balls), Nkosana Mpofu (seven runs off 17 balls) and Sami Ullah (29 runs from 59 balls).

The four wickets that fell were taken by Jalat Khan, Cuthbert Musoko and Roy Kaia. Khan finished day one with figures of 2/85 in 16 overs while Musoko and Kaia had taken one scalp each.
