PREMIER Soccer League chairman and former Caps United boss Twine Phiri was publicly humiliated on Saturday morning when he was told that he was no longer an official Caps United representative at the Zifa elective extraordinary general meeting. Phiri had raised his hand as the official Caps United representative during an introductory session led by Zifa chief executive officer Jonathan Mashingaidze, but a councillor objected indicating that the PSL boss had no locus standi.
A few moments after that, Phiri’s humiliation was compounded when Caps United chairman Lewis Uriri walked in. Mashingaidze again asked who the Caps United representative was and Uriri raised his hand drawing applause from the gathered councillors.
Phiri then indicated that he was at the meeting representing the PSL board of governors.
He now owns a 20 percent stake in Caps United after Harare businessman Farai Jere snatched the majority shares as part of a deal to rescue the former Cup Kings from sinking deeper into financial morass.
Uriri, who lost in his bid to win a place in the Zifa board on Saturday, also owns a 20 percent stake in Makepekepe.
PSL statutes stipulate that only a club president or chairman can sit on the league’s assembly or have voting powers and Phiri’s future in football administration now hangs in the balance as he no longer represents any topflight club.
Phiri had on Friday night at the Soccer Stars of the Year banquet held in the capital, urged his PSL board of governors’ colleagues to vote wisely.
