Two cars were stolen in Bulawayo city centre, with one thief driving off in a vehicle while the owner had left it running to look for change.
In a statement, Bulawayo police provincial spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele said the first victim, a 48-year-old man from Pumula South, had his Honda Fit stolen on Saturday while parked along Herbert Chitepo Street.
“A man parked his motor vehicle, a silver Honda Fit (old shape), between 5th Avenue and 6th Avenue along Herbert Chitepo Street, Bulawayo, and went inside Africa Bet Shop, leaving his motor vehicle doors and windows locked,” said Inspector Msebele.
“The car boot was not locked as it was not functional. He spent about 45 minutes inside Africa Bet Shop and returned to the parking bay to discover his motor vehicle had been stolen.”
Inspector Msebele reported that the following day, a 30-year-old commuter omnibus driver from Nguboyenja had his Toyota Baby Quantum stolen at Food For Less along 11th Avenue and Herbert Chitepo Street.
She said the vehicle, valued at US$13,500, was left with the engine running while the driver looked for change.
“He then saw the accused person jump from the passenger’s seat to the driver’s seat and drive at high speed along Herbert Street heading towards Plumtree. The driver hired a taxi to pursue his motor vehicle but failed to locate it,” said Inspector Msebele.
She confirmed that police investigations are ongoing and authorities are appealing to the public for any information that may lead to the arrest of the suspects.
