Two gold panners from Goromonzi died last week when a mineshaft collapsed at Jongwe Farm.
Police last week said the duo was among 10 gold panners who were trapped in the eight-metre-deep shaft when its walls gave in.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Mashonaland East acting spokesperson Assistant Inspector Tendai Mwanza confirmed the accident.
“The incident occurred at Jongwe Farm where about 10 people are believed to have entered into the shaft and whilst inside, the walls of the shaft caved in, burying the miners alive,” he said.
“Other miners made efforts to rescue their trapped colleagues by using shovels and some of the trapped miners were rescued. Unfortunately, two miners failed to make it and their bodies were retrieved from the shaft.”
Asst Insp Mwanza appealed to miners to exercise extreme caution and ensure that they took precautionary measures for their safety.
“Miners must exercise extreme caution when venturing underground for minerals,” he said.
“It is risky to mine underground, especially when there are no safety precautions in place.”
