The two nations were facing off in the second Test of the ‘Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry’ series. Before kick-off, there was a flyover at the DHL Stadium in Cape Town.
But these weren’t your usual Red Arrows or fighter jets.
Instead two massive PASSENGER PLANES, Airlink Embraer 190s to be exact, cruised overhead.
And the jets left little to no margin for error, leaving viewers worried they would CLIP the stadium roof.
Fans were left stunned when the first plane flew staggeringly low over the stands.
And the second aircraft was cutting it so fine that its right wing clearly cut through the smoke from one pyrotechnic.
Flightradar later confirmed the planes cleared the stadium roof by just TWELVE METRES.
So it’s hardly surprising fans in the stadium were left feeling terrified. One posted on social media:
“This flyover was just absolutely insane.”
A second wrote: “That looks really dangerous and probably strictly forbidden in Europe too.”
A third commented: “I don’t think they were supposed to be that low. Someone may be in trouble.”
A fourth said: “Yeah! Was wild how low that was. “Epic but wild!”
A fifth claimed: “That is something that surely terrifies everyone in the stadium.”
Another added:
“Looked even worse on live TV, legit thought I was about to witness a disaster live.”
Some pilots were concerned about the manoeuvre as shown on a popular chat forum PPRuNe.
Many could be seen to criticise the display as unsafe and dangerous considering the crowd in the stadium.
The two planes were flying at roughly 120 knots, which is 131mph at the time they went over the stadium.
The Springboks won the contest 33-26 thanks to tries from Jesse Kriel, Damian de Allende and captain Siya Kolisi.
The result means they have levelled the series 1-1 ahead of the next Test in Soweto on September 5 . —Sun.
