UNITED Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) doctors have taken the responsibility to renovate Lady Rodwell Maternity and the Intensive Care Unit which are in a deplorable state due to lack of adequate funding.
The doctors have replaced old sinks, bought curtains, painted the walls, tiled the floors and walls using money from their own pockets.
The total cost of the renovations could not be established as individual doctors pledged to fix certain parts of the ward. The medical practitioners said the environment at the maternity ward was no longer suitable for the hospital staff and patients due to its dilapidation.
Chairman of the maternity department Dr Solomon Balus said doctors thought of helping as the hospital is facing financial challenges.
“As doctors, we saw it not proper to work in an environment where wall paint was peeling off. The floors had ‘potholes’ and the sinks were old. Each one of the doctors had to volunteer to renovate the hospital property,” he said.
UBH Chief Executive Officer Nonhlanhla Ndlovu said the doctors were doing a remarkable job.
“The renovations have made the surroundings for the patients to be more comfortable. Getting well is not only about good medication but also a suitable and comfortable environment,” she said.
Ndlovu added that the institution was renovating all other hospital wards with the few resources it has and assistance from doctors was speeding up the repairs.
Dr Anthony Mthombeni said the ward was fast becoming uninhabitable and so he felt the need to take part in the renovations.
“We just didn’t like to see the wards in that state, they were uninhabitable and not conducive for our day-to-day operations,” he said.
