THE United College of Education (UCE) Rotaract Club yesterday donated a set of school uniforms, stationery and food items to a Grade Four pupil at Mafakela Primary School in Bulawayo’s Luveve suburb.
Blessing Magaya (10), who is being taken care of by her grandmother, was identified by the school as a vulnerable learner in urgent need of basic educational and personal support.
The UCE Rotaract Club, a student-led initiative comprising 208 members, mobilised resources to assist Blessing.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Rotaract Club president Ms Nomaqhawe Moyo said the donation is a reflection of the club’s enduring commitment to community upliftment.
“Our vision as the Rotaract Club of UCE is to foster a generation of educators and professionals who are service-oriented, innovative and dedicated to uplifting their communities through action, compassion and collaboration,” she said.
Ms Moyo noted that while the gesture may appear modest, it symbolises a powerful message that every child deserves dignity, support and the tools to thrive in school.
“We believe meaningful education goes beyond the classroom. It is about responding to the needs of society and driving sustainable development from the grassroots level,” she said.
Ms Moyo said the club’s work aligns with the national vision outlined in National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1), which emphasises inclusive, people-centred growth.
The club patron Mr Brilliant Sithole commended the members for their unity and selflessness, urging private companies to join hands with student-led initiatives in supporting communities.
“UCE must not be seen merely as an academic institution but also as a corporate brand with a social responsibility to fulfil. It is such acts of goodwill that define a brand’s true value,” he said.
Founded to empower young people with a platform for leadership, community service and global citizenship, the UCE Rotaract Club has grown into a dynamic force of passionate student volunteers committed to making a lasting impact.
