AS Zimbabwe marks 46 years of Independence, a wave of excitement and anticipation is sweeping across the nation, with all eyes firmly fixed on Matabeleland South, where a historic football spectacle is set to unfold.
Ecstasy and euphoria have gripped communities ahead of the much-anticipated Highlanders versus Scottland Independence Cup clash, scheduled to take centre stage in Maphisa.
The electrifying encounter, confirmed by Government as the headline act for this year’s Independence celebrations, has placed Matobo District firmly in the national spotlight.
For many in the district, the countdown is not just about football, it is about pride, heritage and recognition. Enthusiasts are already imagining the dramatic arrival of Bosso and Scottland team buses rolling into the heart of Matobo, igniting scenes of celebration in a region rich with football history.
Matobo has long been a cradle of talent, producing legendary figures such as Bekithemba Ndlovu and his brothers Dumisani “Fazo” and Mbongeni, who all donned the Highlanders jersey and helped cement the district’s place on Zimbabwe’s football map. Their legacy now meets a new chapter as the area prepares to host one of the country’s biggest football occasions.
Yet amid the excitement, there is also a touch of nostalgia. Many will remember the late Bosso superfan, Lister Dube, whose unwavering devotion embodied the true spirit of Highlanders. Dube, who passed away last year at the age of 68 in Nathisa, was more than just a supporter — she was a symbol of loyalty.
Her home, just 40 metres from the Bulawayo, Kezi road near Nathisa Business Centre, stood as a shrine of Bosso pride. Win or lose, the Highlanders’ flag never came down, fluttering defiantly at her gate for all to see.
One cannot help but imagine how she would have joyfully waved as team buses passed by her homestead on their way to Maphisa, joined by throngs of passionate supporters.
For many in this rural setting, this will be their first ever contact with Bosso and its pleasing preparations for the grand event are gathering momentum, with construction of the new Maphisa Stadium progressing at an impressive pace.
The venue has been transformed into a modern sporting arena, complete with upgraded terraces and a standard athletics track.
Work was intensified on the playing surface and spectator sections, including designated areas for VIP and VVIP guests. The development also features extensive masonry work to ensure the facility meets the demands of a national celebration of this magnitude.
Beyond the match itself, the occasion represents a defining moment for Matobo District, a rare and historic opportunity to accelerate infrastructure development and showcase its cultural and sporting significance to the entire nation.
As Independence Day approaches, one thing is certain: Maphisa will not just host a football match, it will stage a celebration of unity, legacy and national pride, where the roar of Bosso and Scottland fans and the thrill of the beautiful game will echo far beyond the final whistle.
Meanwhile, former Castle Lager Premier Soccer League (PSL) champions Chicken Inn will square off against city rivals Bulawayo Chiefs in a derby match that is set to spice up the City of Kings and Queens’ 46th Independence Day celebrations at White City Stadium.
