NAIROBI. — A Member of Parliament from the South Rift has termed the government as “totally rotten and incompetent” and demanded that President Uhuru Kenyatta dissolves his cabinet and constitute a new one to clean up the mess. In an interview with Nation.co.ke in Kericho Town, Emurua-Dikir MP Johana Ng’eno (Kenya National Congress) said nearly all cabinet ministers had been hit by corruption scandals, leading to the suspension of five of them.
“Issues have been raised in many ministries of this administration. We have done research which proves to the country that the entire cabinet is rotten and it is about time the President dissolves his Cabinet and forms a new one,” he said.
Cabinet Secretaries Felix Koskei (Agriculture), Davis Chirchir (Energy), Charity Ngilu (Land), Michael Kamau (Transport and Infrastructure) and Kazungu Kambi (Labour) stepped aside earlier this year after they were linked to graft by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
This comes as more Kenyans and leaders continue to pile pressure on Devolution cabinet Minister Anne Waiguru to step aside over similar claims. Waiguru and her Education counterpart Jacob Kaimenyi have both survived attempts by Members of Parliament to impeach them.
Ng’eno further warned that unless President Kenyatta moves to disband his Cabinet as soon as possible, he would table a no-confidence motion in Parliament which will compel the President to take the move.
He urged the head of State to “listen to MPs” and send the ministers home, warning that the actions of the ministers was lowering his popularity among Kenyans. “Ms Waiguru is not our only target. We will find the applicable law in the Constitution to compel the President to dismiss all his ministers.
“This is a favour we are doing to the President because the Cabinet as it is will destroy him completely in the next two years,” he added. Ng’eno’s statement came less than a day after an opinion poll conducted by Infotrak revealed that President Kenyatta’s popularity had dipped by more than 25 percentage points over the past year, while Opposition leader Raila Odinga’s popularity grew by 9 per cent over the same period.
Most Kenyans (62 per cent) felt that the country was headed in the wrong direction with 40.9 per cent of them expressing concern over the rising cases of corruption in government. Ng’eno said it was the responsibility of the President to discipline his ministers and fight graft, and urged him to “save himself” from further plummeting of his popularity by disbanding his Cabinet. — Daily Nation.
