The United Kingdom Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Mr Pete Vowles, will on Wednesday morning launch a £500 000 programme aimed at ending violence against women and girls, in a boost to ongoing efforts to promote gender equality and community safety in the country.

The initiative, funded by the UK Government, seeks to strengthen prevention and response mechanisms to violence against women and girls (VAWG) through partnerships with local women’s organisations and the private sector.

It is expected to prioritise practical, community-driven interventions that empower survivors, raise awareness and promote behavioural change.

The launch comes on the sidelines of the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair, where the UK is also showcasing its continued engagement with Zimbabwe across key sectors including trade, investment and social development.

According to statement, the programme will bring together a broad coalition of stakeholders, including civil society groups and corporate partners, to collaborate on innovative solutions tailored to local contexts.

The initiative is also expected to strengthen support systems for survivors while addressing root causes of gender-based violence.

Gender-based violence remains a pressing concern globally and within Zimbabwe, with stakeholders increasingly calling for multi-sectoral approaches that combine policy, community action and sustained funding.

Wednesday’s programme launch signals a renewed commitment by the UK to work alongside local partners in addressing the scourge, while leveraging platforms such as the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair to deepen dialogue and collaboration.
