UMGUZA District has emerged as a standout performer in Matabeleland North, rolling out a wide range of transformative development projects with a combined investment exceeding US$1,6 million and ZiG37,6 million under the Government’s devolution agenda.
The developments were unveiled by the Minister of State for Matabeleland North Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Richard Moyo, who said the district’s achievements span critical sectors including infrastructure, digital services, healthcare, housing, education, social protection and climate resilience.
Umguza’s infrastructure push has been underpinned by the acquisition of key heavy equipment aimed at improving service delivery while reducing operational costs.
“In infrastructure, the acquisition of essential machinery such as a road roller worth US$190 264,95, an excavator valued at US$160 480,70 and a refuse compactor costing US$80 000 has significantly improved road quality, reduced labour costs and enhanced urban cleanliness,” said Minister Moyo.
He highlighted the completion of the US$950 000 Somgolo Bridge as one of the district’s flagship achievements, noting that it has significantly improved mobility and access to services.
“The Somgolo Bridge has revolutionised access to schools and clinics for surrounding communities, especially during the rainy season,” he said.
In line with Government’s digitalisation drive, Umguza has also adopted smart governance solutions aimed at improving efficiency and citizen engagement.
“Embracing the digital age, the district has implemented a self service Local Authority Development System (LADS) machine and a council chatbot, valued at US$2 500 and US$1 000, respectively. Both are operational and have drastically improved response times to citizen queries,” said Minister Moyo.
The housing sector has also registered notable progress, largely driven by private sector investment. Large scale developments such as Hopelyn and Kings City are delivering thousands of residential stands, easing housing shortages amid growing demand.
Healthcare infrastructure has equally attracted significant investment, with several clinics now operational and expanding access to medical services for thousands of residents.
“Projects such as Maboleni Clinic (US$250 000), Redwood Clinic (US$150 000) and the newly commissioned Bhumane Clinic (US$150 000) are already providing improved healthcare services to communities,” said Minister Moyo.
Human capital development remains a key focus area, with sustained investment in education infrastructure aimed at improving access and retention, particularly among vulnerable learners.
“The operational Nyamandlovu and Mahlothova boarding facilities, each valued at US$238 000, have significantly reduced walking distances for learners, with the girl child being a major beneficiary,” he said.
Social protection and climate resilience initiatives have also featured prominently in the district’s development agenda. Projects such as the US$400 000 Ntabazinduna horticultural scheme are boosting household incomes, strengthening food security and empowering women.
Access to clean water has improved through several piped water schemes, including the Seafield water project valued at US$51 000, which is enhancing public health outcomes and community resilience.
Minister Moyo said the scope and impact of the projects demonstrate the effectiveness of devolution as a vehicle for inclusive development.
“The array of projects in Umguza District is a testament to His Excellency President Mnangagwa’s commitment to holistic development under the devolution agenda. From upgrading infrastructure and embracing digital solutions to ensuring access to quality healthcare, education and water, these initiatives are not just about construction. They are about building communities, empowering our people and creating a sustainable future for Matabeleland North. Umguza is setting a powerful example,” he said.
Minister Moyo said the fact that most of the projects are already functional or operational shows that the substantial investment is translating into tangible benefits, including job creation, improved service delivery and long-term economic empowerment.
