THE United Nations has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Zimbabwe’s media in advancing national development.
Speaking at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) Media Indaba, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator Mr Edward Kallon applauded the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services for its collaboration with the UN in empowering the media.
“I commend the Ministry of Information and the excellent collaboration the United Nations in Zimbabwe has, particularly with the Permanent Secretary, Mr Nick Mangwana,” said Mr Kallon.
He emphasised the media’s influence in shaping public opinion and supporting progress.
“The media play an essential role in national development, advancing political, economic, social and cultural rights, and enhancing the well-being of people,” he said.
Mr Kallon also highlighted the UN’s initiatives, including training, legal reforms, and support for digital platforms to boost media capacity.
“The UN supports media building in Zimbabwe to help the country achieve SDGs by strengthening the media’s capacity to report on and promote the SDGs,” he said.
“To fulfil the media’s role, professionalism and objectivity are crucial. Media bias and sensationalism hinder contributions to national development.”
Mr Kallon concluded by reaffirming the UN’s commitment to working with the media to realise Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030.
