THE United Nations and the Southern African Development Community (Sadc) have reaffirmed their joint commitment to restoring peace in conflict-ridden eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
This follows a high-level visit by UN Special Representative Madam Bintou Keita to the Sadc Mission in DRC (SAMIDRC) headquarters.
Madam Keita, who is head of the United Nations Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO), visited SAMIDRC Force Headquarters in Goma on June 14, where Force Commander Major General Monwabisi Dyakopu received her. The visit emphasised growing coordination between the two missions.
“We value the unwavering support from SADC forces in stabilising this region. Their presence is not just military, it is a lifeline to thousands affected by conflict,” Madam Keita said.
In response, Major General Dyakopu thanked MONUSCO for its ongoing cooperation, particularly in logistics and medical evacuations.
“MONUSCO’s support has been crucial, especially in the repatriation of our injured and fallen heroes,” Maj Gen Dyakopu noted.
The SRSG’s four-day visit to Goma included meetings with M23/AFC leadership, civil society, women’s groups, and MONUSCO staff.
Madam Keita stressed the importance of civilian protection and regional collaboration, adding that “strengthening partnerships with regional stakeholders is key to sustainable peace.”
She also announced plans to visit the SADC Secretariat in Gaborone to further deepen cooperation on peace and security in the region.
The visit comes at a critical time, as instability continues to threaten communities in Eastern DRC.
