VISITING United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety Mr Jean Todt has promised to continue assisting Zimbabwe on road safety management and to improve the national road safety record.
Mr Todt and his delegation are in Zimbabwe as part of the Government’s continued efforts to prioritise road safety.
He is a former rally driver and ex-chief executive of Formula One team Ferrari.
He was appointed as special advisor to the UN Secretary-General, where he has distinguished himself over the years.
Mr Todt and his delegation yesterday held a meeting with Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona in Harare where they discussed road safety.
In an interview after the meeting, Minister Mhona said he was happy that Mr Todt had visited Zimbabwe again.
“We are hosting one of our good friends today who has been a pillar of strength for our country Zimbabwe in terms of championing road safety.
“We have met Mr Todt at the United Nations in Geneva and we are grateful he decided to do a follow up meeting to make sure we are implementing what we agreed in Geneva.
“I must commend our President, His Excellency Cde Dr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, who sent me early this year to Geneva where we have our annual meetings there.
“As much as we rehabilitate our roads, we will also enhance issues to do with safety,” he said.
Minister Mhona said they had since tabled a paper before the Cabinet Committee on Legislation seeking to harmonise fragmented road safety laws.
The Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion had since started mobilising funds for the Road Accident Fund.
Mr Todt said he was impressed by the Government’s commitment to road safety, adding that there was a need for good road signage and law enforcement.
He also met Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Minister Kazembe Kazembe who explained to him the measures law enforcement agents had put in place to curb road carnage in the country.
