A MASVINGO man allegedly lured his niece and young cousin to a mountain where he raped the girl as the boy watched, before brutally killing both children.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest of Obedience Makonye (29) in connection with the double murder that occurred on 26 January, at Gondora Mountain in Guyo B Village, Zaka.
Makonye allegedly targeted his niece, Elizabeth Munetsi (14) and his cousin Shepherd Makonye (9) as the two were walking home from school.
“The suspect allegedly lured his niece and cousin to the mountain where he allegedly sexually abused the female in the presence of the boy,” said Commissioner Nyathi.
To cover up the crime, Makonye allegedly killed the two children.
The children’s bodies were discovered a day later, after Makonye confessed to the police.
“The suspect was arrested on 27 January 2026 after confessing to the heinous incident to the Police,” said Comm Nyathi.
Following the confession, officers moved swiftly to the mountain where the bodies of the two victims were located.
Police also recovered a kitchen knife believed to have been used in the murders.
Comm Nyathi reiterated an appeal to parents and guardians to closely monitor the safety of children, especially those walking long distances to and from school through isolated areas.
The suspect is expected to appear in court soon.
