Renowned comedic talent, Uncle Zex Mdawini, popular for his humorous skits, has embarked on a new chapter in his artistic career by delving into the world of poetry.
The National Arts Merit Awards-winning comedian gained prominence, particularly during the Covid-19 era with his remarkable performances in the comedy arena, featuring popular skits such as “Landlord”.
Explaining his venture into poetry, Uncle Zex Mdawini highlighted three key reasons.
“Firstly, it’s because poetry, once a thriving talent, has been somewhat forgotten. I used to engage in poetry back in the early ’80s, broadcasting on Zbc Radio 4 in a programme called Abalobi Bakusasa. I won prizes like branded pens, T-shirts, and caps, making it both fun and productive.
“Secondly, while comedy is steadily growing in Zimbabwe, it often struggles to fill venues on its own.
“By incorporating poetry, I aim to enhance the comedic experience and the audience has responded positively to this combination.
“Lastly, people respond to change, especially positive ones,” said Uncle Zex Mdawini.
Despite facing a setback when his phone was stolen in December last year, disrupting his online presence, Uncle Zex Mdawini remains optimistic. He plans to reopen his Facebook, X, Instagram, YouTube and TikTok accounts. Remarkably, he has transformed the unfortunate incident into creative inspiration, composing a song titled Wen’owatshontsh’foni yami about the thief.
Uncle Zex Mdawini has shifted his focus from the “Landlord Jokes” to introducing a new facet with “Landlord Neighbour” jokes. The initial skits, “Boiling Water” and “Reduce The Volume” are gaining widespread traction nationwide.
“Additionally, he intends to produce more social commentary skits that resonate with people and plans extensive travel to bring his comedic product to audiences across Zimbabwe and even venture into South Africa. – @mthabisi_mthire.
