A last minute header by Khalimani Dube powered ZRP Bulawayo Province to a victory over Bosso 90 in a Southern Region Division One Soccer League encounter played at Barbourfields Stadium on Thursday.
The build-up to the goal saw Mduduzi Mhlanga passing the ball to Zibusiso Dambo on the right who then sent in a perfect cross that Dube headed in.
The victory moved the police side a place up the table from position six to five with 27 points from 19 games.
While ZRP Bulawayo celebrated their victory, Bosso 90 gaffer Melusi Sibanda was left disappointed.
“Our target has always been a top four finish and we didn’t want to drop points. We’re within our target despite the loss. The boys fought hard and conceding in the last minute isn’t good at all. I think the game was evenly balanced and a draw was going to be a fair result,” said Sibanda.
Meanwhile, action continues today with title favourites Bulawayo Chiefs taking on army side Indlovu Iyanyathela at HQ One Brigade.
Chiefs are yet to lose this season, having won 16 out of their 18 games. The only sides that have managed to get a point from Chiefs this season are Makomo and Camyn who they played to identical 0-0 draws.
Today they face Indlovu Iyanyathela coming from a 1-0 away win against Mosi Rovers in Victoria Falls.
Indlovu Iyanyathela were inactive last weekend after their encounter against Makomo was postponed to a later date.
“It won’t be easy playing a side that has nothing to lose and this is more like a test of character for our players. We just have to be patient and stick to our game plan. Even if Indlovu Iyanyathela are lowly placed on the table (position eight), they are capable of upsetting us hence the need to guard against complacency,” said Thulani Sibanda, Chiefs’ coach.
A victory for Chiefs will leave them needing seven points from the remaining seven games to be crowned champions.
Second placed ZPC Hwange are inactive this weekend.
Fourth placed Makomo can displace Bosso 90 from position three if they beat Zim Leopard in Hwange this afternoon. Tomorrow, a Victoria Falls derby is on cards when Amagagasi plays host to Mosi Rovers hoping to make it two wins in a row.
Amagagasi handed perennial campaigners ZPC Hwange a 1-0 defeat in Victoria Falls last weekend.
