STRESS may be described as our mental, emotional, physical and behavioral response to anxiety-producing events. This results in strain, pressure or tension and has a physical and psychological impact.
Stress arises in any event, situation or circumstance occurring in an individual’s environment, which is perceived by the individual to be threatening his/her well-being and healthy functioning (Lazarus & Folkman, 1984)
Though commonly perceived as negative, stress may sometimes be viewed as positive.
Positive Stress (Eustress)
Hans Selye argued that not all stress is bad, and stress be viewed as ‘stimulation to growth and development…it is a challenge and variety, it is the spice of life’
Negative Stress (Distress)
Exists where there is a perceived imbalance between demands and our ability to meet these demands, thus events that disrupt life and requires some form of action to resolve.
Common causes of stress
Financial difficulties, family problems, marital problems, death of a loved one, marriage, birth, chronic illness, work-related demands, facing unfairness in the environment, noise, daily hassles, traumatic events
Common Stress Symptoms
Physical Symptoms – fatigue, aches and pains, difficulty sleeping, muscle aches and stiffness, nausea, being sick e.g. headaches, stomach pains.
Cognitive Symptoms – memory problems, Inability to concentrate, and constant worrying.
Emotional Symptoms- anxiety, nervousness, pessimism, feeling of guilt, moodiness, depression, anger, negativity
Behavioral symptoms include -drug, alcohol, or food abuse, isolating self from others
Dealing with Stress;
Change the situation: (Avoid the stressor or Alter the stressor) or change your reaction: (Adapt to the stressor or accept the stressor)

– Re-evaluate your goals and priorities!
– Recognize and accept your Limits and set limits!
– Seek solutions to the problem!
– Seek support/assistance – talk to others (personal and/or professional)
– Change harmful habits!
– Do something creative & learn new skills!
