UNESCO Director-General, Ms Audrey Azoulay, has arrived in the country for her first official visit and is expected to visit Zimbabwe’s heritage sites – Victoria Falls and Great Zimbabwe – and attend the Cop 15 meeting on wetlands.

Today, Ms Azoulay met with Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development Minister Fredrick Shava at his offices.

During the meeting, Ms Azoulay assured Minister Shava of her organisation’s commitment to continue with its operation related to education, science, innovation and technology, and artificial intelligence.

“This organisation has an excellent relationship with Zimbabwe. Our regional office is here in Harare,” she said.

“We work together on many of the Government’s priorities for inclusive education, for science, technology, innovation and artificial intelligence.

“Also, of course, the preservation and promotion of the extraordinary cultural heritage of the country.

“I’m looking forward to visiting the Great Zimbabwe site tomorrow, and also the Victoria Falls soon for the opening, as well as the Conference of Parties on the Wetlands.”

Minister Shava confirmed that UNESCO will continue running its programmes in Zimbabwe.

“We have agreed and confirmed that the programmes that UNESCO is running in Zimbabwe will continue to be run, and to the best of their ability, in terms of the heritage sites, in terms of the schools’ programmes, in terms of all the other aspects that the (UNSECO) ROSA (Regional Office for Southern Africa) office has in their books,” he said.
