UNICEF has appointed Ms Etona Ekole as its new representative for Zimbabwe.
Ms Ekole is succeeding Dr Tajudeen Oyewale and will oversee the implementation of UNICEF’s programmes for 2022 to 2026.
She presented her credentials to Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister, Ambassador Frederick Shava today.
Ambassador Shava welcomed Ms Ekole and emphasised UNICEF’s strong partnership with Zimbabwe in areas like education, social welfare and health.
He highlighted the upcoming Regional World Children’s Day and Zimbabwe’s SADC chairmanship role as opportunities to advocate for children’s rights.
“We are excited to welcome Ms Etona Ekole as the new UNICEF representative in Zimbabwe,” Minister Shava said.
“Her expertise and dedication will greatly enhance our efforts to support women and children. UNICEF has established strong partnerships with various ministries, including the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, where we focus on empowering learners; the Ministry of Public
Service, Labour and Social Welfare and the Ministry of Health and Child Care.
“Additionally, assuming the chairmanship of the Southern African Development Community (Sadc) empowers us to advance the well-being of women and children across the region collaboratively. We look forward to working together towards our shared goals.”
Ms Ekole brings extensive experience from UNICEF roles in Guinea-Bissau and Palestine, and has a proven record of accomplishment in leadership, advocacy, and program management.
She expressed gratitude for the warm welcome and reaffirmed UNICEF’s commitment to partnering with Zimbabwe.
“I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade for fostering a strong diplomatic relationship between the Government of Zimbabwe and the United Nations family, especially UNICEF,” she said.
