SIX Kenyan motorcyclists are roaring across Africa on a mission of unity, a key part of their nation’s 60th independence anniversary celebrations. Their continental odyssey brought them to Bulawayo on Thursday, marking a significant stop on a journey designed to celebrate Kenyan independence while igniting collaboration and cultural exchange across the continent.

The team, “Around Africa On Motorcycle,” comprises team leader Nicholas Kiplangat Korir, Ndiritu Moses Gachemi, Kairu Mark Mbuthia, Kiumbe Sammy Mwongera, Nyamunga Leonard Omondi, and the sole female member, Gari Havana Edna Nimboro. Upon arriving in Bulawayo, they were welcomed at City Hall by the Kenyan Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Stella Munyi, the Minister of State for Bulawayo Provincial Affairs and Devolution (represented by Morris Mbewe), Mayor David Coltart, and local councillors.

Ambassador Munyi explained the tour is part of a broader initiative marking Kenya’s 60 years of diplomatic relations, highlighting the resilience, growth, and adaptability of Kenya’s foreign policy.

“In December 2024, we commemorated this milestone with various activities, including launching a revised Kenya Foreign Policy and Strategic Plan. We commissioned the Around Africa Motorcycle Riders to represent the spirit of Kenya’s diplomatic journey,” said Munyi.

The team’s journey began on 12 December 2024, from Marsabit in Northern Kenya. They completed the first leg through Ethiopia, Djibouti, and back to Nairobi by 9 January 2025. Their second leg, starting in Mombasa on 18 January, has taken them through Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, and now Zimbabwe. The next leg will traverse Botswana and South Africa, culminating in Cape Town. This arduous journey demonstrates the power of unity and collaboration across borders.

Bulawayo Mayor David Coltart highlighted the importance of such tours, particularly given recent continental tensions.
“This is about demonstrating African unity. In these challenging times, we need such gestures to remind us of our shared bond as Africans.

“We are delighted you’ve come to our city, and I look forward to your departure tomorrow. Safe travels as you promote goodwill across the continent,” said Coltart.

The Vice-President of Motorsport Zimbabwe, David Mouat, expressed hope for stronger Kenya-Zimbabwe motorsport partnerships.
“This initiative creates lasting exchanges, paving the way for greater cooperation in motorsport,” he said.

Team leader Nicholas Kiplangat Korir echoed this sentiment, stressing the significance of the unity and brotherhood celebrated on their journey.

“This is the most honourable reception we have received. Bulawayo, thank you for your warmth. This tour symbolises African unity, and we hope to build lasting relationships,” he said.

Korir also said the team’s Kenyan scholarship initiative, currently supporting 1 000 students, with plans for expansion.
“We run a scholarship programme, and funds raised through this tour will help us assist more students across the continent,” he said.

Their journey, rooted in solidarity and shared purpose, is not just about traversing the continent on two wheels, but connecting people, fostering understanding, and strengthening the spirit of unity. — @innocentskizoe.
