Who still remembers, the hit song “Solo naMutsai” by Devera Ngwena Jazz Band in the 90s?
The song which is about love was played and still played at weddings and growth points.
Others have even made it their ringing tone but music is collective.
As they say, there is nothing new under the sun, South African-based Zimbabwean Afrobeats singer Wilton Isheanesu Doba affectionately known as “Unkat” has said a new version of the 21st century of the song.
It is not an imitation but just the same title.
However, Unkat and socialite Madam Boss pictures and trailers went viral last week with social media agog if the comedienne cum socialite has found a new love.
In the mini-video and pictures, the duo was getting married, as she was dressed in a wedding gown.
The good thing, the socialite is still married to Ngoni and Unkat confirmed that it was a video shoot, not a skit as some had suggested.
Unkat who was formerly known as Legion revealed in an interview that his much-awaited video, “Solo naMutsai” is dropping this week.
But how he was working with Madam Boss and what inspired the song?
“My music is inspired by day-to-day life occurrences, in fact, social settings.”
“A lot is happening when it comes to love life and we need to promote the culture of love in marriages as artistes, that is our job to preach love and happiness. I chose Madam Boss to be in the video because of her social media influence as you have seen the teaser last week was trending and I am happy it worked, now we are dropping the video this week,” explained Unkat.
Unkat places great importance on the visual aspect of his music, ensuring that music videos accurately convey the song’s message and inspire viewers.
The Cape Town-based musician said his name Unkat is pronounced as “un-cut” to represent resilience.
“My career began in 2014 as a dancehall artiste, originally under the name “Legion (Rigyaan).”
“Over the years, I then transitioned to Afrobeats and changed my name to Uncut so that I represent the resilience as well as uniqueness and purity of my art,” he said.
Unkat said was working with some of the local musicians on his project which will be released early next month as part of a Christmas gift to his fans.
“My latest project is singles that include collaborations with Madam Boss, Holy Ten, Calvin Mangena, Kay Flow, and South African star Dj Tira. An album is also due to be released in December which features Madam Boss,” he said.
Asked to comment on how the local music is and what lessons can be drawn from Cape Town, Unkat said local music is in the right direction.
“The local music sector is growing although there is a need for record labels that can nurture and manage talent,” he said.
“We need to continue supporting each other and be able to write songs that tell our own stories. Corporates and stakeholders should also support upcoming and established musicians fairly.”
Surprisingly with his type of music and style, Unkat said he adores the late System Tazvida’s music.
“My role Model is System Tazvida because of his music that seemed to be inspired by daily occurring events.”
“It’s very challenging to penetrate the musical scene especially if you’re not from Harare.”
Unkat said he was once a Zimdancehall artiste.
“I used to sing Zimdancehall, remember the song, “Tinodhakwa here boys rangu.”
“Like mentioned before, I draw inspiration from personal encounters and universal themes, crafting lyrics that resonate with people on a profound level.”
Some have said that Zimbabwe’s rich musical heritage and the presence of exceptionally talented musicians have continually pushed Unkat to improve and be the best he can be.
His career highlights include the creation of a unique award category, “Best Dancehall Artiste Outside of Harare,” specifically for him. Unkat’s motto, “I can resist pressure,” reflects his determination to overcome challenges and setbacks, viewing them as opportunities for growth.
In a diverse local music scene exposed to the world through social media, Unkat emphasizes the importance of creativity and uniqueness to stand out and meet fans’ high expectations.
“My music aims to convey the message that “we can resist pressure,” reminding fans to stay true to their paths despite life’s challenges. I wish to collaborate with artistes like Davido and Tekno,” he said.
“My advice is to resist social pressure while embracing character pressures to become “uncut diamonds” and continually refine their art.”
