UNKI Mines (Private) Limited has applied for a licence to establish a 10.6 megawatt solar photovoltaic power plant in Shurugwi, Midlands Province.

This is part of a growing trend in which mining firms and other entities are investing in electricity generation to cushion their operations and ease pressure on the national grid.

The Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) announced the development in a public notice today (Thursday).

“Notice is hereby issued in terms of section 4(3) of the Electricity (Licensing) Regulations, 2008 published in Statutory Instrument 103 of 2008 that the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) has received an application from Unki Mines (Private) Limited to construct, own, operate and maintain a 10.6 MW solar photovoltaic plant in Chironde Village, Shurugwi, Midlands Province,” ZERA said.

The project, designed primarily for self-consumption, is expected to significantly enhance Unki Mines’ energy security while supporting national efforts to expand renewable energy generation.

“Unki Mines (Private) Limited intends to generate power from the proposed solar plant for own consumption,” the authority said.

According to the application, the proposed plant will be integrated into the national grid.
“The project will be connected to the grid through the construction of two 4-kilometre 11kV single dog lines from the proposed Unki Solar PV facility substation to the Unki 132/11kV substation,” ZERA said.

The move follows similar initiatives by other mining and industrial firms that have turned to renewable energy sources to hedge against power shortages, reduce reliance on fossil fuels and align with global trends on sustainable energy.

Energy experts have noted that these private sector-driven power projects are crucial in augmenting existing national capacity while reducing strain on the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA).

The application was lodged in terms of the provisions of Sections 42 and 46 of the Electricity Act (Chapter 13:19).

If approved, the Unki Mines project will add to a growing list of independent solar projects being rolled out across the country, demonstrating increased private sector participation in the energy sector.
