Unlawful possession of ivory lands man in jail

A FILABUSI man was arrested and sentenced to nine years after facing one count of contravening the parks and wildlife act: unlawful possession of raw ivory.

According to a statement by the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) Malaki Moyo (30) was brought before the Beitbridge Magistrates’ Court.

“On the 16th of October 2024, at Dulibadzimu rank, Beitbridge the detectives who were on patrol noticed the accused person carrying a green and white sack which he was hiding behind his back,” reads the statement.

The detectives became suspicious and approached him and identified themselves to the accused person before conducting a search.

“During the search they recovered piece of raw unmarked ivory in the sack and they asked the accused person to produce the permit or licence which allowed him to be in possession of the ivory but he failed to do so,” the NPAZ added.

The accused person was arrested and the ivory was taken to ZimParks and the recovered ivory weighed 4,824kg and had a street value of USD820,20.
