Unlicensed cop jailed

Patrick Chitumba Midlands Bureau Chief
A SENIOR police officer was on Wednesday fined $200 and in default four months imprisonment for driving without a licence. Inspector Munyaradzi Mandizvidza, 36, of Westview suburb in Kadoma was convicted on his own plea by Gweru magistrate Musaiwona Shotgame. He was fined $200 and in default four months imprisonment.

The prosecutor, Bernard Nyoni, said on September 1, at around 10.30AM, Mandizvidza was driving his Toyota Gaia registration number ADH 3484 along the Harare-Bulawayo highway. Nyoni said Mandizvidza had four passengers in his vehicle.

“On approaching the 265km peg near Regina Mundi Girls High School in Gweru, Mandizvidza, who was travelling towards Gweru from Kadoma, was stopped by police officers manning a roadblock,” he said.

Nyoni said the officers asked Mandizvidza to produce his driver’s licence but he failed to do so since he is not a holder of the document issued in terms of the Road Traffic Act.

“The accused was arrested since he had no right to drive a motor vehicle while not being a holder of a licence,” he said.
