Zimbabwe’s adoption of Heritage-Based Education 5.0 marks one of the most ambitious educational reforms since independence.
Introduced under the Second Republic, the philosophy seeks to transform institutions of higher and tertiary education from centres of theoretical learning into engines of economic development.
At the heart of the model is the belief that universities and colleges must not only produce graduates, but also produce goods, services, innovations and industries that directly contribute to national development.
For decades, the education system in Zimbabwe largely followed a traditional approach centred on teaching, research and community service. While these pillars produced educated citizens, critics argued that the system created graduates who were academically qualified but disconnected from the country’s economic realities.
Many graduates struggled to find employment because universities were producing job seekers rather than job creators.
Education 5.0 attempts to change that trajectory. By adding innovation and industrialisation as core pillars, the new philosophy demands that institutions become active participants in economic production. This means universities are now expected to establish innovation hubs, industrial parks and production units capable of converting ideas into marketable products and services.
What makes the philosophy unique is its heritage-based orientation. Heritage-based education encourages institutions to draw from locally available resources, indigenous knowledge systems and community realities when developing solutions.
In simple terms, Zimbabwean universities are expected to solve Zimbabwean problems using local knowledge and resources. This approach recognises that development cannot be sustainably achieved through overreliance on imported models and technologies that may not suit local conditions.
The importance of this philosophy cannot be overstated. Zimbabwe possesses abundant natural resources, rich cultural knowledge and a youthful population full of potential. However, much of this potential has historically remained underutilised. Heritage-Based Education seeks to bridge the gap between knowledge production and economic productivity. Students are now innovating around agriculture, mining, renewable energy, manufacturing, food processing and digital technologies. This aligns education with national development priorities.
One of the strongest aspects of Education 5.0 is its emphasis on industrialisation and commercialisation. Universities are no longer merely publishing research papers that gather dust in libraries. These researches are now being translated into tangible products, patents, start-ups and industries. This practical orientation has the potential to stimulate provincial economies, create employment opportunities and reduce dependence on imports.
Already, some institutions have begun producing goods ranging from agricultural products and pharmaceuticals to technological innovations and construction materials. Innovation hubs have emerged as symbols of a new educational culture where students are encouraged to think entrepreneurially. These hubs have become catalysts for economic transformation.
A practical example can be drawn from Lupane State University, which has fully embraced Heritage-Based Education through agricultural biotechnology and livestock innovation. The university is actively producing and utilising goat artificial insemination technologies as part of its agricultural research and community empowerment initiatives that directly feed into the Matabeleland provincial economy. The institution is developing goat semen extenders and breeding genetically improved, drought-resistant goat herds aimed at boosting livestock productivity among smallholder farmers. This initiative has enabled local farmers to improve the productivity and genetics of indigenous goats through selective breeding, thereby strengthening food security and household incomes in arid regions.
Furthermore, the philosophy promotes self-reliance and national identity. By integrating indigenous knowledge systems into mainstream education, Zimbabwe is reclaiming confidence in its own heritage. Traditional farming methods, herbal medicine, local architecture and environmental conservation practices can all contribute meaningfully to sustainable development when combined with modern science and technology. In this regard, Heritage-Based Education becomes not only an economic strategy but a cultural and intellectual decolonisation project as well.
The success of Education 5.0 depends heavily on collaboration between government, industry and academia. The institutions will not industrialise in isolation. Private sector partnerships, access to markets, policy consistency and investment incentives are essential.
The philosophy remains a bold and necessary step towards repositioning Zimbabwe’s education sector as a driver of national development. The global economy increasingly rewards countries that innovate, industrialise and harness local knowledge for sustainable growth. Zimbabwe cannot afford an education system disconnected from production and economic realities.
Ultimately, Heritage-Based Education 5.0 challenges educational institutions to become centres of solutions rather than merely centres of instruction. The philosophy has transformed universities into engines of economic growth, empowering graduates to become entrepreneurs and innovators and contribute meaningfully to Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030 aspirations.
