A SECURITY guard, who was arrested for stealing poly bags at a company he was guarding, told a court he resorted to stealing to make ends meet as his employer was not paying him on time.
Jethro Chakanyuka (41) pleaded guilty to theft before Western Commonage magistrate Mr Steven Ndlovu.
“Your worship my employer delays to give us our money. I am in arrears with my rent. My children have no food. My wife and I are of ill-health so we need medication. I committed the offence to supplement my finances. I am sorry,” said Chakanyuka.
Prosecuting, Mr Keneth Shava said between April and June this year Chakanyuka stole a total of 300 poly bags from Agro-foods where he is a security guard. He said police recovered the stolen bags at Chakanyuka’s house.
The magistrate sentenced Chakanyuka to a wholly suspended three months in prison, on condition that he performs 105 hours of community service.
Mr Ndlovu said Chakanyuka had betrayed the trust of the company.
“It is so embarrassing that after being tasked to protect the company property you went on to steal from them. However, this court will take into consideration that you are a first offender and you admitted your offence without wasting the court’s time,” said Mr Ndlovu.
