A 23-year-old unlicensed commuter omnibus driver who knocked down a pedestrian and dragged her for 10 metres, killing her in the process, was ordered to perform 700 hours of community service.

George Mapuranga of 284 Overspill in Epworth, was also banned from driving classes 1 and 2 vehicles for life and other vehicles for a year.

Mapuranga failed to negotiate a curve, hitting a cyclist and seriously injuring him, before hitting and dragging the woman to death. His vehicle stopped after ramming a tree.

The incident took place on August 28 this year when Mapuranga was driving a Toyota Hiace belonging to Mr Ronald Munodawafa. The vehicle was heading south along Overspill Road with a single passenger on board.

The court heard that this was the time Samuel Ndlela (23) was cycling along the same road while the now deceased Viola Muhamba (27) was standing on the extreme side of the road.

Tragedy struck when Mapuranga failed to negotiate a curve and veered off the road, hitting Ndlela who fell on the tarmack. The two accident victims were rushed to Parirenyatwa Hospital where Muhamba died on admission, while Ndlela was treated of serious injuries.

The matter was reported to the police leading to Mapuranga’s arrest.
