This thrilling metamorphosis signals the dawn of a new era for the city’s lifestyle scene, infusing it with fresh energy, opportunities and an undeniable sense of community.
Once a haven for “groovists” seeking unforgettable nights, the former Uptown Club now stands transformed into a vibrant shopping mall. As visitors step through the entrance, they are greeted not by pulsating beats and neon lights but by exquisite displays showcasing the latest fashion trends from local entrepreneurs. Gone are the days of the main nightclub and legendary performances; in their place, a myriad of cubicles have sprouted offering a home to a multitude of innovative businesses.
The nostalgia surrounding Uptown Club, etched fondly in the memories of Gweru’s residents, speaks volumes about its significance as a hub of entertainment. Legendary disc jockeys, alluring ladies’ and gents’ nights, thrilling games with fabulous prizes, and captivating performances by talented artists once coloured the city’s night life. Yet, as the world grappled with the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, even this beloved institution couldn’t escape its impact, leading to its eventual closure.
But, in the face of adversity, a visionary entrepreneur emerged, determined to breathe new life into the city. Timothy Mukahlera, a prominent businessman and owner of Uptown Club, took a bold step, transforming the cherished night spot into the elegant Topsy-Tim Mall. Rooted in his commitment to support small and medium enterprises (SMEs), this ambitious endeavour now provides a nurturing platform for local traders to flourish.
Mukahlera’s vision for the city was crystal clear: a modern mall not only designed to cater for the shopping and dining desires of Gweru’s residents but one that would also serve as an engine of economic growth. And so, Topsy-Tim Mall emerged, quickly becoming a vibrant epicentre of activity. Boasting a diverse array of businesses from fashion boutiques to electronics stores, beauty and cosmetics to a delightful restaurant, the mall offers something for everyone.
This transformation has not only reinvigorated the city centre but also acted as a catalyst for employment opportunities, contributing significantly to reducing Gweru’s unemployment rate. The creation of 57 refurbished cubicles within the mall has become a sanctuary for local SMEs, allowing them to spread their wings and expand their reach to a broader customer base. Additionally, the presence of 12 offices within the complex has drawn in financial companies, consultancy agencies and other professionals, further elevating the city’s business landscape.

At the same time, enduring establishments like The Barn and Downtown embrace renovations, mirroring the city’s adaptability and dynamic spirit.
