THE United Nations World Tourism Organisation General Assembly Golf tourney roars into life this morning at the Elephant Hills Golf Course with Vice President Joice Mujuru taking the first tee at 10.30am. The Vice President will lead a star-studded team that has prominent sports personalities. The organisers have announced a fully subscribed course with 25 teams of four players each, bringing to 100 the number of players that will take to the greens. The field will be made up of prominent personalities from all spheres.

“We are excited about the turnout and it looks to be a brilliant golfing day,” said the chairman of the organising committee Munesu Munodawafa who is also the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Infrastructure Development.

He said the Vice President’s team will be made up of prominent Zimbabweans who have excelled in various spheres of life.

Vice President Mujuru will lead a team made up of Formula One race driver Axcil Jeffries, who jetted into the country on Wednesday from his base in the United States, prominent cricketer Hamilton Masakadza, the first black cricketer to score a first class century, five times Soccer Star of the Year winner George Shaya and Paralympics gold medallist Elliot Mujaji.

“The corporate world really responded to our call and besides bankrolling the tournament, they are also fielding their own teams. We have companies and teams from Mbada Diamonds, Marange Resources, NetOne, TelOne, Zimplats, Schweppes, Liquid Telcoms, Econet and many others.

“Public enterprises like Potraz, Zinara and CAAZ are also participating,” said Munodawafa.
National airliner Air Zimbabwe have agreed to provide additional flights to the resort town from yesterday up to Sunday in support of the event.

Zimbabwe and Zambia will co-host the General Assembly from 24-29 August.
