Urban farmers bemoan late inputs

FARMERS in urban areas of Mashonaland West Province, who finished preparing their land a few weeks ago, are concerned about the late distribution of inputs under the Presidential Well-Wishers Input Support Scheme.

In separate interviews, the farmers expressed displeasure over the late distribution of the farming inputs, saying they had already missed the planting time since they were yet to receive seed and fertilisers for this farming season.

“We are having a strong challenge this season compared to last year when we received inputs on time and we planted early,” said Mr Runesu Komboni.
“Some of us don’t have money to buy seed and fertilisers, but we have small pieces of land that are sustaining us.” Another farmer, Mr Taurai Moyo, said fellow farmers in the rural areas were already receiving the inputs.

“The rural populace has already received the inputs and has started planting, Government must also consider us because we also contribute immensely to the food security of the country,” he said. Farmers in the province last week criticised Agritex officers for allegedly sabotaging Government by frustrating people during the distribution of the inputs.
