The Charge de Affairs at the US embassy, Mr Thomas Hastings, yesterday paid a courtesy call on Speaker of Parliament Advocate Jacob Mudenda where they discussed various legislative issues and Parliament’s agenda for the session.
Mr Hastings met the Speaker at his office at Parliament building.
“It was a great opportunity for us this morning to speak with Hon. Speaker Mudenda about his role in parliament and the priorities for the next few months.
“In addition, we talked about the partnership that the US Government has with parliament because for the past 20 years we have had capacity building programmes working with parliament to help parliament to be more effective in carrying out its roles,” he said.
He also commended the country for adopting the new constitution in 2013 and the ongoing realignment of the laws with the supreme law.
“My government is pleased that the by-elections are taking place. They were delayed for sometime because of the pandemic but we are pleased to see that they are taking place and obviously the democratic conditions in Zimbabwe for fair elections are key priority of our Government and anywhere in the world. So we are watching very closely the way the elections are conducted, not just on election day but the preparation and everything about the situation leading up to the elections,” he said.
