A 44-year-old man from Bulawayo has appeared in court facing attempted murder charges after allegedly shooting his ex-wife’s boyfriend during a dispute. Elvis Basira, a resident of Pumula East, is accused of firing a CZ pistol and injuring Ian Chifunde in the left elbow. The incident reportedly took place on the night of July 27, 2025 in Pelandaba West, around 10pm.
Basira was granted bail of US$100 or its equivalent in ZiG at the prevailing bank rate. As part of his bail conditions, he was ordered not to interfere with State witnesses and was remanded to August 13, 2025 by Western Commonage Court magistrate, Sibongile Marondedze.

Prosecutor Milton Moyo told the court that on the night in question, Chifunde was walking home after drinking beer at Marisha Bar. As he approached his residence, he noticed Basira’s vehicle parked outside the home of his girlfriend, who is also Basira’s ex-wife. Chifunde changed direction and walked towards the vehicle. Upon noticing this, Basira reportedly got out of his car armed with a pistol to investigate.
It is alleged that Basira ordered Chifunde to lie on the ground while pointing the firearm at him. An altercation ensued, during which Basira allegedly shot Chifunde in the left elbow. Realising the severity of the injury, Basira then transported Chifunde to the police station in his vehicle, where he surrendered himself and explained what had happened.
Police recovered a CZ pistol, serial number 14512, with 14 rounds in the magazine. The firearm is registered to the company where Basira is employed and is licensed under a valid firearm certificate.
