THE dramatic arrest of the notorious Vumbunu brothers in South Africa has reignited public interest and hope in the long-stalled investigation into the daring US$4 million Ecobank heist that rocked Bulawayo last year.
For months, frustration had gripped the nation as the masterminds behind the October 3 bank job remained at large, outsmarting police and denting public confidence in law enforcement.
But last week’s breakthrough has turned the tide.
“We are thrilled that the police have made a breakthrough in the case with the apprehension of the two suspected crime brothers,” posted one user on social media.
Another said, “This arrest is a testament to the dedication and perseverance of the investigation team. Justice is finally on its way.”
The Vumbunu brothers’ name had long been whispered in underworld circles, and their capture has been met with a mix of celebration and suspicion. Some praised the relentless cross-border cooperation between Zimbabwean and South African police. Others weren’t buying it.
“So, it’s just going back to the usual suspects. This would be real news if they caught someone unexpectedly. This feels like guesswork,” commented another sceptical user.
Police remain tight-lipped about the details leading to the arrest, but confirmed that the brothers are expected to face trial and could spend years behind bars if convicted.
With the suspects now behind bars, investigators have vowed to smoke out the remaining members of the heist crew whose brazen operation shook Zimbabwe’s financial and security systems.
The case is still unfolding, but one thing is clear. The arrest of the Vumbunu brothers has injected new energy into the fight for justice in one of Zimbabwe’s most audacious heists.
