THE dreams of Zimbabwe’s Under-18 girls basketball team have been shattered after the country was forced to withdraw from the FIBA U18 AfroBasket Finals due to a lack of funding.
The young stars, who had earned their place at the continental tournament through hard work and determination, will now watch from home after the Basketball Union of Zimbabwe (BUZ) failed to secure the US$47 000 required to cover travel, accommodation and participation costs.
The tournament which runs from this weekend to August 16 in Côte d’Ivoire, was supposed to provide Zimbabwe’s brightest young female basketball talents with an opportunity to test themselves against Africa’s best while attracting the attention of scouts and colleges.
Instead, it has become another painful reminder of the financial hurdles that continue to hamper the development of sport in the country.
BUZ confirmed the disappointing development.
“With a heavy heart, Basketball Union of Zimbabwe announces that our U18 Girls Team will not be participating in the upcoming FIBA U18 AfroBasket Finals scheduled for the 5th to 16th of August 2026 in Cote d’Ivoire.
“The budget required for travel, accommodation, and participation was US$47 000. Despite our best efforts, we were unable to raise the funds in time.”
For the players, the news is particularly heartbreaking. Months of training camps, sacrifices by families and countless hours on the court had all been geared towards representing Zimbabwe on one of African basketball’s biggest youth stages.
Many of the girls had hoped the tournament would open doors to scholarships and professional opportunities while inspiring the next generation of female basketball players back home.
BUZ acknowledged the disappointment felt by everyone involved and paid tribute to the team’s efforts.
“To our players, coaches, parents and supporters: We see your hard work and sacrifice. You qualified and you deserved this chance.”
The governing body also pledged not to give up on women’s basketball despite the setback.
“We remain committed to women’s basketball and will continue to seek partnerships to ensure our girls get future opportunities to represent Zimbabwe.
“Thank you for your understanding and continued support.”
The withdrawal is a bitter blow not only for the players but also for Zimbabwean basketball, which has been striving to regain its footing on the continental stage.
While neighbouring countries continue investing in youth development and international exposure, Zimbabwe’s inability to finance participation at major events threatens to slow the progress of talented athletes who have already shown they can compete.
For the young girls who earned the right to wear the national colours, the opportunity has slipped away through no fault of their own. Their qualification proved they belonged among Africa’s elite.
Sadly, this time, it is finances, not performances on the court that have denied them their moment on the continental stage.
