Two police officers, Paul Muchenje and Shamiso Nyabasa, were granted $50 bail each by a Chinhoyi Magistrate after being caught taking a $1 bribe from a motorist.
The officers, stationed at ZRP Chemagamba and ZRP Chinhoyi Central respectively, appeared before the Chinhoyi Magistrates Court on Friday.
According to reports, the officers were accused of demanding bribes ranging from US$1 to US$5 from motorists evading the Lion’s Den tollgate along the Harare-Chirundu highway. They allegedly threatened to impound vehicles and demanded a fine of US$100.
The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) set a trap for the officers using a dollar note with the serial number D101548630.
When the officers signalled the motorist, Blessing Mazinyama, to stop, he handed the trap money to Muchenje, who put it in his trousers’ pocket. ZACC investigators then apprehended the two officers.
The State is the complainant in the case, and the two officers were not represented by a lawyer during their court appearance. (The Herald)
