Bulawayo.
Addressing journalists on preparations for the congress in Harare last Thursday, organising secretary Engineer Elias Mudzuri confirmed internecine strife was prevalent in many provincial structures.
He, however, tried to attribute the internal problems to Zanu-PF.
“I appreciate that there is violence but I don’t know where this culture is coming from.
“It happened in a lot of provinces but we have dealt with that.
“We discovered that some of these people are not even in the party structures,” he said.
MDC-T spokesperson Mr Nelson Chamisa quickly added: “Zanu-PF is more active in our congress than us.”
Mr Mudzuri said the jostling for positions was consistent with democracy.
He said all positions were up for grabs at the congress.
It is, however, understood that no one is going to challenge MDC-T leader Mr Morgan Tsvangirai. Some reports are that Mr Ian Makone might contest incumbent Mr Tendai Biti for the secretary-general’s post.
Eng Mudzuri – who fell out of favour with Mr Tsvangirai and was last year dropped from Cabinet – could be challenged by Mr Chamisa.
