A social soccer tournament aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles and combating drug and substance abuse is set to take place at in Harare on Saturday, featuring eight teams.

The tournament kicks off under the theme “Say No to Drugs”, continuing an initiative that linked last year’s anniversary celebrations with community health awareness.

Several such tournaments have been arranged in and around Harare for the past few years, with many former footballers and aspiring footballers taking part.

Former Dynamos goalkeeper Zondai Nyaungwa believes this is key to fighting drug and substance abuse in the country.

“Football brings people together. We want to use that platform to encourage young people to make positive choices and understand that drug abuse can undermine their health, ambitions and future,” said Nyaungwa.

Teams set to take part include the hosts, LM Auctioneers, Nato Legends, Vigilance, Ruby Villas, Mabhinya, UZ Legends and SOCCO Golden Stars.

Zifa board member Brighton Ushendibaba, who is promoting the event, said social soccer is crucial.

Having grown up in rural Gutu, he has advocated greater support for grassroots football and is encouraging others to do so.

Such initiatives have also provided a platform for former internationals, including Dumisani Mpofu and Masimba Dinyero, to remain involved in the game.

Last year’s 11th anniversary tournament at Old Hararians Sports Club carried the same anti-drug theme.

“Everyone will want to win, and we expect competitive football. But we also want players and supporters to leave remembering the message behind the tournament,” Nyaungwa said.

“Our appeal is for the community to come and support the teams, enjoy the football and help us spread the message. Fighting drug abuse requires a collective effort, and sport can contribute to that effort.”
