UZ Robotics Club bags medal at Pan-African contest

THE University of Zimbabwe Robotics Club bagged a silver medal at the recently held Pan-African Robotics Competition at the Dakar American University of Science and Technology in Somone, Senegal.

The Robotics Club is under the Faculty of Computer Engineering, Informatics and Communications at the university and competed in competition from July 23 to 30 which focused on agricultural technologies (AgTech).

The team comprised Malvern Chimbwanda, Phionah Tariro Chikwene, Malvin Munashe Haparimwi and Evans Sabvure and was supervised by Mr Peter Worsnop, Ms Patience Mpofu and Mrs Susan Mupimidzi.

Vice Chancellor of the University of Zimbabwe Professor Dr Paul Mapfumo applauded the team for lifting the country’s flag high in robotics.

“On behalf of the University senate, University of Zimbabwe council, the executive, staff and students, congratulations to the University of Zimbabwe Robotics Club under the Faculty of Computer Engineering Informatics and Communications, on becoming silver medallists,” Prof Mapfumo said.

“This year’s competition focused on agricultural technologies where University students and young professionals from across Africa were challenged to solve complex, real-world problems using robotics and artificial intelligence.

“The UZ Robotics team came up with state-of-the-art robotics tools to develop an Agricultural Robot for autonomous farm navigation, weed detection using computer vision, and autonomous seed planting.

“The winning innovation will undoubtedly contribute significantly to e-agriculture in our very own Zimbabwean agricultural sector.”

Robotics engineering is the process of designing, creating, and maintaining robotics systems and entails using technologies like line of technology, automation, and artificial intelligence to develop robotic systems and applications.

These applications assist humans in performing labour-intensive tasks efficiently.
