Uzumba Maramba Pfungwe constructing heroes acres

the areas that witnessed intense battles during the liberation struggle.
Speaking in an interview following commemorations to mark Heroes Day, UMP district administrator Mr Mark Kadaira said the locals were spearheading the iniative.
“We have begun construction of these shrines to ensure that our fallen heroes are accorded proper burials,” he said.
“As you know UMP is a big district so we want to ensure that we have more of these shrines in various areas and so far we have already established one heroes’ acre in Uzumba.
“We want to make sure that all people appreciate the sacrifice that was made by our heroes for the freedom that we enjoy today.”
The heroes’ acre at which three former freedom fighters are buried was established last year at Kapawa Hills in Machekera Village.
Meanwhile, scores of villagers gathered at UMP District Heroes’ Acre near Mtawatawa to pay their respects to the gallant fighters who sacrificed their lives for the liberation of the country.
Uzumba legislator Cde Simbaneuta Muda-rikwa said they would also construct libraries at the newly established shrines that will chronicle the history of the liberation struggle.
The main celebrations in the district were held at UMP District Heroes Acre and were attended by thousands of villagers while Mr Kadaira read President Mugabe’s speech.
A soccer tournament for youths in the district was also held as part of the commemorations.
