The Dairiboard Schools Rugby Festival kicked-off at Prince Edward School to a rather uncharacteristically high turnout today.
By mid-day Vainona girls had  stolen the show having registered the biggest win of the morning.
Vainona girls thrashed George Stark 72-0 and it was in the second half that they put up a more serious performance.
By half time they were leading 31-0, a thrashing of George Stark that comprised five tries and three conversions.
Despite the reduction in the number of teams taking part in the week-long event this year’s edition has seen a higher spectator turnout
on the opening day compared to the previous years.
Oriel Boys got the festival going with a 19-0 win over Lord Malvern at Jubilee Field which is traditionally used for First XV games.
The first drawn match of the festival was registered when Nyanga based Marist Boys came from behind to level matters against Herentals
College of Harare in the second game.
But before the games kicked off, the Zimbabwe Rugby Union through the referees society took time to educate team managers on the importance
of discipline not only in the game but during the entire festival.
Top official Mudiwa Mundawarara said they were worried by some of the ill-discipline incidents that took place especially last year.
“And that is why we approached the ZRU because discipline is an important aspect of the game.
“Over the years there were some elements of discipline that were lacking and I am sure if we go on with such type of awareness we will
have better all round rugby players,” said Mundawarara.
