Zesa Holdings is losing thousands of dollars through theft of copper cables and vandalism of its equipment by criminals countrywide.
Police have arrested some of the criminals, while others are still at large.
In a statement, Criminal Investigations Department spokesperson Detective Inspector Portia Chinho said police recently arrested two Harare men in Chinhoyi for stealing cables and equipment worth US$2 079.
The two are Maxwell Kanjera (29) of Waterfalls and Shepard Katungunde (36) of Marlborough for contravening Section 60(a)(3)(b) of the Electricity Act, Chapter 13:09, “cutting, injuring, damaging, vandalising, destroying any apparatus used to transmit, distribute or supply electricity.”
The theft occurred at Plot 8, Makwidiba Farm in Banket.
“Circumstances are that on May 4, 2019, the complainant went to a nearby farm to attend a memorial service. She returned at around 0100 hours during the same night and while on her way home, she noticed that the lights at her farm were turning on and off. The complainant contacted her son who was home to investigate the cause. In a bid to establish why the lights were turning on and off, the complainant’s son went to the tobacco barns and he saw two accused persons who were busy cutting armoured cables.”
