The Vanuavavine were at their brilliant best at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi, standing up against the more-fancied Zimbabwe under floodlights in a six-wicket win on Thursday night.
Despite being told to field first after losing the toss, Selina Solman’s side sent shockwaves through the cricketing world through two wicket-taking yorkers from Rachel Andrew, before spinners Vanessa Vira (3/14) and Player of the Match Nasimana Navaika (4/13) stifled the Zimbabweans, bowling them out for just 61.
The Ni-Vanuatu women were no shrinking violets in the chase, holding their nerve in reaching the target of 62 in the 17th over.
Rasu, who took coaching reins before Vanuatu’s victorious East Asia-Pacific qualifying campaign back in September last year, sung the praises of the team again.
“In their debut at this qualifier, facing Zimbabwe seemed daunting,” Rasu began.
“However, their victory speaks volumes about their dedication and skill. It’s an honour to witness their performance, especially as newcomers and an underdog.
“This team is a tight-knit family willing to fight for one another.”

Rasu himself is no stranger to the pressures of international cricket on the field as the current captain of the men’s international team.
His side’s premier all-rounder, Rasu pointed to the spirit of women’s skipper Solman, an all-rounder herself, who has led of the team’s push both on and off the field.
“It’s been an incredible journey with these ladies. Initially, they trained without coaches, relying on Selina’s determination to keep them focused. Their dedication was evident in every practice session, and stepping in as their coach later, I was inspired by their energy to win.
“I’ve grown to love each one of them and have worked on honing their skills. Winning the regional qualifiers against Papua New Guinea, ranked 11th globally, marked a turning point.
“They’ve since evolved both mentally and physically, becoming outstanding ambassadors for the country.”
Vanuatu’s efforts to keep the Lady Chevrons to 61 is the lowest score an Associate Member has kept a Full Member to in women’s T20Is, made all the more remarkable considering it was their first competitive meeting with a Full Member in competitive cricket.
The side’s next encounter at the Qualifier is against the Netherlands on 27 April at Tolerance Oval in Abu Dhabi, and Rasu vows the side will keep the foot down in their pursuit for a top-two spot in the group.
“These girls are here to play, and their resilience and talent continue to impress. They’ve proven themselves time and again, and I have full faith in their capabilities.
