ROBERT VAS was crowned the Zimbabwe Seniors Golfers Society national champion after he got the better of over 60 other players in the three-day tournament whose curtain came down at Royal Harare yesterday evening.

The tournament attracted 13 players from Malawi and had four categories: cadets, seniors, veterans and the Methuselahs.

It was Vas who won the championship overall gross on 161 points and the veterans net score on 71 points.

Vas was happy with his win and is now hoping the success will spur him on to claim more tournaments.

“I am very happy to have won this tournament and I am grateful to the organising committee who gave us game time. The competition was tough but I managed to do well during the three days.

“I am happy that we had a good turn-out and I am looking forward to take part in more seniors’ tournaments. I have played with some guys who I have known for a while and it brought back good old times.

“The course was playing well and I managed to do well,” said Vas.

Dawson Mareya was second 10 points behind Vas’ gross score, while Rishard Khan won the Cadets division.

Jabulani Chirasha of Matabeleland walked away as the Cadets’ runner-up on 70 points, with Johannes Manyenga placed third.

In the Seniors net winners, Vijay Patel prevailed with Sydney Mushava coming second and Paul Nuellemann completing the top three.

Vas also took home the floating trophy in the Veterans’ category and had Langston Govinder as the runner-up.

Enock Gava, Theo Khumalo and Isidore Muthumbira completed the top five in the Veterans category.

The Methuselahs was won by Ambelal Gopal as Steve Ferreira was second with Misheck Manatsa, Miccah Moyo and Reg Bennet completing the order.

Malawi SGS president Eric Chikanda said he was happy to be in Harare and seeing some of his countrymen walking home with prizes.

“We are happy as MSGS members to have come to Harare for the first time and we hope to have more of these invites in the future. We enjoyed the course and it was playing well and to those who won keep on practising as the sport is interesting.

“I am hopeful that we will have some players from this side coming to Malawi when we host our nationals,’’ Chikanda said. The tournament had some sponsors on board with Old Mutual, TM Pick ‘n’ Pay, Electrosales Patel, among others coming on board.
