The Vatican has declared nine days of mourning for Pope Francis’ death, starting from Saturday when his funeral is being conducted.
The body of the late Roman Catholic leader is lying in state at St Peter’s Basilica after being transferred to the venue this Wednesday, with over 20 000 people reported having already viewed his body.
In an announcement, the Vatican said Pope Francis’ funeral Mass will mark the beginning of the ancient tradition of holding nine consecutive days of mourning, which will be marked by Eucharistic celebrations held in suffrage for the late Pope.
“Following an ancient tradition, the Catholic Church will observe nine consecutive days of mourning, marked by Masses held in suffrage for the late Pope Francis,” reads the announcement.
While these Eucharistic celebrations are open to everyone, each day a different group is scheduled to participate based on their connection with the Holy Father.
