Veld fire renders family homeless

A CHISHAWASHA Hills family was on Tuesday left homeless after a veld fire swept through the area. The fire also destroyed several hectares of land. In an interview with The Herald, Mr Tendai Chiwanzanise, the house owner, said he was still to come to terms with the incident.

“I am still in shock after having learnt that all my property was reduced to ashes on Tuesday afternoon,” he said. “I received a call from my wife advising me of the mishap.”

Chiwanzanise said the two-storey thatched house caught fire from the roof after winds coaxed flames in its direction. “My wife was busy at the gate trying to put out some raging flames and didn’t notice that the roof had already caught fire,” he said. “A passer-by saw the flames from the roof and alerted my wife, who then rushed inside to rescue our one-year-old child who was sleeping in one of the rooms.” Mr Chiwanzanise said his wife looked helplessly as the fire ravaged their property, reducing it to ashes. He said the matter had since been reported at Gleytwin Police Station under case number CR 3189794 and was appealing for help from well-wishers.

“I have reported the matter to the police who are doing investigations after reports that someone had started the fire. We are appealing for help from well-wishers in any kind since we do not have clothes and anywhere to sleep,” he said.
