A BULAWAYO vegetable vendor has dragged her estranged husband, who is also a vendor, to the Maintenance Court demanding $1,000 per month for the upkeep of their two children.
Sibongile Tshuma of Nkulumane told Bulawayo magistrate Sheunesu Matova that Vusa Nkomo deserted her and their children saying he was going back to his parents’ place.
She added that Nkomo takes vegetables to the rural areas in a hired vehicle and earns $2,240 per month.
“Your Worship, I am telling you the truth, he earns that amount. When we were staying together he used to bring $80 a day from his vending and he usually sells vegetables every day,” Tshuma said.
“I want to use it to pay rent, buy groceries, pay school fees and cater for medical expenses for the children.”
However, Nkomo offered to pay $80 per month and denied earning $2,240 a month.
He said he makes $20 per day profit and works for 12 days a month.
“Your Worship, she is lying, I don’t order vegetables to sell every day. I only sell for 12 days in a month,” Nkomo said.
Magistrate Matova reprimanded Tshuma for demanding $1,000 per month saying maintenance was not about fixing someone but was meant for the children.
He told Tshuma to stop creating figures from the air and ordered Nkomo to pay $100 as maintenance every month for the upkeep of his two children.
