Vic Falls to host Boxing tourney

THE Victoria Falls Boxing Academy in conjunction with the Zimbabwe Boxing Federation will on Saturday host a boxing tournament that will feature 50 bouts.

The event will be staged at an open space at Mkhosana Shopping Centre.

Following relaxation of lockdown restrictions and the green light for sporting activities to resume, organisers feel it’s time for boxing lovers to enjoy the sport   while at the same time helping boxers shake off rust after almost two years of inactivity.

The boxing ring was donated by South African-based Zimbabwean Mark Valentine, who honoured a pledge he made in 2019 to assist the academy when it was established.

Academy founder Tobias Owen Muposiwa said they opted for an outdoor venue to ensure easier adherence to Covid-19 health protocols.

The academy will field 15 boxers made up of 12 juniors, youths and seniors.

Muposiwa said they will use the tournament to select a team for Victoria Falls that will be part of the pool for future national team selections.

Valentine, who is already in Victoria Falls, started interacting with Muposiwa a few years ago when he saw him and his boxers training in the bush during one of his visits.
