THE Victoria Falls Border Post is now operating 24 hours a day with immediate effect, a joint initiative by Zimbabwe and Zambia aimed at creating a seamless corridor for commerce and travel across Southern Africa.
The move, announced in a Government Gazette by the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage permanent secretary Ambassador Raphael Faranisi, extends the border’s previous operating hours of 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
The change is designed to dismantle a significant non-tariff barrier to trade and is expected to be a major enabler for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
“In terms of section 4:02 of the Immigration Act, the Minister has extended the operating hours for the Victoria Falls Border Post to twenty-four (24) hours on a daily basis, with effect from the date of publication of this notice,” the Gazette said.
Chief Director of Immigration, Ms Respect Gono, confirmed the development, highlighting its strategic importance.
“With Beitbridge and Forbes Border Posts already operating around the clock, the two countries are collaborating on a landmark development expected to boost regional trade and tourism,” Ms Gono said. The 24-hour operation is set to drastically reduce transit times and logistics costs. Trucks entering from South Africa via Beitbridge can now cross into Zambia at Victoria Falls or Chirundu at any time, creating a fluid transport artery through the region.
The initiative dovetails with the ongoing rehabilitation of the Beitbridge to Victoria Falls Highway, ensuring that improved border efficiency is matched by smoother road travel and further cementing Zimbabwe’s role as a key regional transit hub.
