THE Zambezi Netball Association commemorated the International Day of the Girl Child through a tournament, as part of a campaign to use sport to uplift the lives of women in the area at the weekend.

All the teams in the Zambezi Community Netball League took part at Mfelandawonye suburb ground in the resort city of Victoria Falls.
The International Day of the Girl Child  is observed every year on October 11.

The tournament featured Kasambabezi Queens, Bangelo, Golden Stars, Grace Mission Eagles, Discovery, Shooting Stars, Gwanzura and Corinthians.
Kasambabezi Queens emerged  victors, having amassed 15 points and scored 81 goals. Bangelo came second with 12 points and 57 goals while Golden Stars settled for third with 6 points and 46 goals.

The league’s technical advisor Lastane Tshuma told Zimpapers Sports Hub that they organised the tournament for the second time running, having launched it last year.

He said this year’s edition was held under the theme ‘Our Time to Shine, Our Rights, Our Future.’

“The International Day of the Girl Child was held successfully at Mfelandawonye grounds. All our teams took part.

“We agreed to take a break from league games and use the weekend to honour women and girls as we join the world to commemorate the International Day of the Girl Child.

“There was no better way to do this, other than to use netball to push the campaign and make residents of Victoria Falls aware of the importance of knowing about the rights of the girl child. Sport as a unifier in the community, is one tool we have identified that has power to emancipate girls and women. That is our aim as the Zambezi Netball Association,” said Tshuma, who is also one of the tournament organisers.
